Overview
Adult Length
Body 4 – 6 cm (plus the thin whip-like tail / flagellum)
Venom
Non-venomous and harmless — vinegaroons have no venom and no sting. Their only defence is a fine acetic-acid spray from the rear that smells strongly of vinegar; it can irritate eyes but is otherwise harmless. The heavy pedipalps can pinch.
In the Wild
Habitat
Thai forest-floor vinegaroon (whip scorpion) of humid lowland and hill forest. Burrows in moist soil and shelters under logs, rocks and leaf litter, emerging at night. 0 – 800 m.
Wild Diet
Insects, other arthropods, worms and slugs, crushed with the powerful pincer-like pedipalps. Nocturnal predator.
Captive Care
Temperature
25 – 29 °C ambient — 23 °C cool end
Humidity
75 – 85 %. Keep substrate damp throughout; provide a shallow water dish.
UV Requirements
None required (nocturnal / fossorial).
Feeding
Crickets, roaches and earthworms every 5 – 7 days.
Enclosure
Terrestrial/fossorial set-up with 8 – 12 cm of deep, packable moist substrate for burrowing, plus cork-bark hides. Min 25 × 25 cm. Keep humid and ventilated.
Temperament
Secretive and largely docile — relies on burrowing and the vinegar spray rather than aggression. May pinch with the pedipalps if grabbed; not a true handling species but easy to keep.
