Venom
Non-venomous. Coils tightly and discharges an irritant 1,4-benzoquinone defensive secretion that can stain skin amber/brown and irritate eyes — wash hands after handling and avoid the face.
In the Wild
Habitat
Warm, humid tropical forest floor of Southeast Asia. Burrows through leaf litter, loose topsoil and decaying wood. 0 – 1,000 m.
Wild Diet
Detritivore — decaying leaf litter, rotting wood and decomposing plant matter; occasionally fallen fruit.
Captive Care
Temperature
24 – 28 °C ambient — 22 °C cool end
Humidity
75 – 90 %. Keep substrate consistently moist and deep; provide a shallow water dish.
UV Requirements
None required (nocturnal/cryptic).
Feeding
Decaying hardwood leaf litter and rotten white wood as the staple; supplement with cucumber, squash, fruit and a calcium source (cuttlebone). Replenish substrate and leaf litter regularly.
Enclosure
Burrowing terrestrial set-up with 10 – 15 cm of deep moist organic substrate, leaf litter and rotting wood; bark hides. Colony-tolerant. Min 30 × 30 cm for adults.
Temperament
Slow, docile and non-aggressive; coils when disturbed and may release staining secretion. Handleable, but wash hands afterwards.
Origin
Not found in the wild in Thailand. Native range: Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam.
