Venom
Old-World tarantula with no urticating hairs. Medically significant venom — bite causes intense local pain, swelling and muscle cramping. No anti-venom; advanced keepers only.
In the Wild
Habitat
Lowland and hill evergreen rainforest of peninsular southern Thailand. Fossorial — excavates deep vertical silk-lined burrows. 0 – 600 m.
Wild Diet
Insects, other arthropods and occasional small vertebrates. Nocturnal burrow-mouth ambush predator.
Captive Care
Temperature
26 – 30 °C ambient — 24 °C cool end
Humidity
75 – 85 %. Deep substrate kept lightly moist; provide a water dish and good ventilation.
UV Requirements
None required (nocturnal).
Feeding
Crickets, roaches and locusts. Slings 2 – 3× weekly; adults every 7 – 10 days.
Enclosure
Fossorial — 15 – 20 cm of packed moist substrate over a 25 × 25 cm footprint, with a cork-bark hide. Heavy webber.
Temperament
Highly defensive, fast and quick to bite if disturbed. Not a handling species.
