Overview
Adult Length
~1.2 cm body; ~2 – 2.5 cm legspan (one of the larger jumping spiders).
Venom
Trivial venom — harmless to humans; a bite (rare) causes nothing more than a pinprick. Not medically significant.
In the Wild
Habitat
Diurnal salticid of forest edge, shrubland, gardens and human-modified habitats across tropical Asia. Hunts on foliage, walls and bark by sight. 0 – 1,200 m.
Wild Diet
Active visual hunter of flies, moths, small insects and other spiders — stalks and pounces rather than building a web.
Captive Care
Temperature
24 – 30 °C ambient — 22 °C cool end
Humidity
60 – 75 %. Light daily misting; good ventilation. Tolerates a fairly dry enclosure if given drinking droplets.
UV Requirements
None required, though bright ambient light suits this diurnal hunter and encourages activity.
Feeding
Flightless fruit flies and house flies for slings; small crickets, bluebottles and roach nymphs for adults. Every 2 – 4 days.
Enclosure
Arboreal — a tall 15 – 20 cm enclosure with twigs, leaves and bark for perching and nest pockets; abundant horizontal/vertical surfaces. Keep singly.
Temperament
Bold, curious and diurnal; minimal venom and often tolerant of gentle handling, though fast and prone to jumping. A popular display species.
