Overview
Adult Length
~10 – 13 cm legspan; the species epithet refers to crescent ("little moon") leg markings.
Venom
Sparassid huntsman — not medically significant, but the large fangs can give a painful mechanical bite. Localised effects only.
In the Wild
Habitat
Forest and bark habitats from India through Indochina to the Greater Sunda Islands. A fast, flat, nocturnal bark hunter; Thai populations are paler than the purple Malaysian form. 0 – 1,000 m.
Wild Diet
Active ambush hunter of insects and other arthropods — moths, roaches and crickets — taken by speed, not a web.
Captive Care
Temperature
25 – 30 °C ambient — 23 °C cool end
Humidity
70 – 80 %. Light daily misting with good ventilation; provide drinking droplets.
UV Requirements
None required (nocturnal).
Feeding
Crickets, roaches and moths. Adults every 7 – 10 days; slings every 4 – 5 days.
Enclosure
Arboreal — tall enclosure (25 cm+) with vertical cork-bark slabs and crevices; shallow substrate. Keep singly.
Temperament
Very fast and flighty; flees readily and may bite if cornered. Display species for experienced keepers, not for handling.
