Venom
Mild venom — sting roughly comparable to a bee or wasp. Defensive but relies mainly on its heavy pincers; not life-threatening to healthy adults.
In the Wild
Habitat
Humid lowland and peninsular rainforest of southern Thailand and Malaysia. Burrows beneath logs, roots and leaf litter on the forest floor. 0 – 600 m.
Wild Diet
Insects, other arthropods and occasionally small vertebrates. Nocturnal ambush predator that seizes prey with its pincers.
Captive Care
Temperature
26 – 30 °C ambient — 24 °C cool end
Humidity
75 – 85 %. Keep the substrate damp and provide a shallow water dish.
UV Requirements
None required (nocturnal). Avoid direct UV / bright light.
Feeding
Crickets, roaches and locusts. Adults every 7 – 10 days; will take the occasional pinky.
Enclosure
Terrestrial, 8 – 12 cm of moist substrate for burrowing, with cork bark and broad hides. Min 30 × 30 cm for adults. Adults can be kept communally with care.
Temperament
Defensive pincer display but generally reluctant to sting — calmer than buthids. Not recommended for handling.
