Habitat
Terrestrial and saxicolous. Cool, humid limestone caves, rocky crevices and shaded forest floor on Hainan Island, China. Crepuscular and nocturnal; low-elevation karst forest.
Wild Diet
Small invertebrates — crickets, roaches, spiders, moths and other soft-bodied insects.
Captive Care
Temperature
Cool-running: 22 – 26 °C ambient with NO hot basking spot. Never above 28 °C — this species is heat-sensitive.
Humidity
70 – 85 %. Daily misting, permanently damp substrate and a humid hide.
UV Requirements
Low (crepuscular). UVI 0 – 1. A weak T5 2 – 5 % UVB is beneficial but not essential.
Feeding
Gut-loaded crickets and dubia roaches dusted with calcium + D3, the occasional waxworm treat. Every 2 – 3 days.
Enclosure
Terrestrial, min 45 × 45 × 45 cm for a pair. Cool, heavily planted, with cork bark, rock caves and a moist hide. No bright basking lamp.
Temperament
Shy, secretive and delicate — best as a display species, tolerating only brief gentle handling. Striking dark body with cream/orange banding and red eyes.
Origin
Not found in the wild in Thailand. Native range: China (Hainan Island).
