In the Wild
Habitat
Terrestrial, ground-dwelling and crepuscular. Arid rocky grassland, scrub and desert fringe across Afghanistan, Pakistan, north-west India and Iran; shelters in burrows by day.
Wild Diet
Insectivore — insects, spiders and other small invertebrates.
Captive Care
Temperature
Warm end / belly heat 30 – 33 °C; ambient 25 – 28 °C; cool end 22 – 24 °C.
Humidity
30 – 45 %, with a dedicated moist hide for clean shedding.
UV Requirements
Low (crepuscular). UVI 0 – 1. A low T5 2 – 5 % UVB is beneficial but optional if D3 is supplemented.
Feeding
Gut-loaded crickets, dubia roaches and mealworms dusted with calcium + D3, the occasional waxworm treat. Every 1 – 2 days for juveniles.
Enclosure
Terrestrial, min 60 × 45 × 30 cm. Warm, cool and moist hides; under-tank or overhead heat giving belly warmth. Avoid loose sand for juveniles.
Temperament
Hardy, docile and one of the best beginner lizards; tolerates gentle handling well. CB strains come in a wide range of selectively-bred colours and patterns.
Origin
Not found in the wild in Thailand. Native range: Afghanistan, Pakistan and north-west India and Iran.
