Overview
Adult Length
3 – 4 cm body length
Venom
Non-venomous (a solifuge, not a true spider) — has no venom glands. Powerful chelicerae can deliver a painful nip, but there is no toxin; not medically significant.
In the Wild
Habitat
Unusual tropical-forest solifuge of southern Vietnam and Indonesia (most camel spiders are desert animals). Lives in leaf litter and on the forest floor. Fast-moving ground predator.
Wild Diet
Insects and other small arthropods, run down and crushed with the large chelicerae. Mainly nocturnal/crepuscular active hunter.
Captive Care
Temperature
26 – 30 °C ambient — 24 °C cool end
Humidity
70 – 80 %. Keep one area of substrate lightly moist with a drier surface; good ventilation.
UV Requirements
None required (largely nocturnal).
Feeding
Crickets, roach nymphs and other small insects. Every 3 – 5 days — a fast, voracious feeder.
Enclosure
Terrestrial with 4 – 6 cm of substrate, leaf litter and flat hides; secure lid (very fast). Min 25 × 25 cm. Keep singly — cannibalistic.
Temperament
Extremely fast, nervous and aggressive toward prey; will nip if cornered. Strictly hands-off; experienced keepers only.
Origin
Not found in the wild in Thailand. Native range: Vietnam and Indonesia.
