Old-World venom — no urticating hairs. Medically significant: a bite causes severe pain, swelling and prolonged muscle cramping. One of the more defensive Asian species; treat with great care.

Lowland and monsoon forest of mainland Southeast Asia. A deep-burrowing fossorial species that lines its retreat with silk. Uniform glossy black-brown adults. 0 – 700 m.

Insects, other arthropods and small vertebrates ambushed from the burrow. Nocturnal sit-and-wait predator.

75 – 85 %. Deep moist substrate with a drier surface; water dish and good ventilation.

None required (nocturnal).

Crickets, roaches and locusts. Slings every 4 – 5 days; adults every 7 – 10 days.

Fossorial — 15 – 20 cm of packed moist substrate for deep burrows, plus a cork-bark starter hide. Min 30 × 30 cm footprint.

Highly defensive, extremely fast and quick to threat-pose or bite. Strictly hands-off; experienced keepers only.
