In the Wild
Habitat
Damp lowland and hill forest of Thailand and adjacent Indochina. Forest-floor dweller that burrows in moist decomposing leaf litter, rotten wood and humus. 0 – 900 m.
Wild Diet
Decaying leaf litter, rotten wood, fungi and humus. A nocturnal detritivore.
Captive Care
Temperature
22 – 27 °C ambient — 21 °C cool end
Humidity
75 – 85 %. Keep substrate consistently moist; mist regularly and provide a damp burrowing layer.
UV Requirements
None required (nocturnal).
Feeding
Rotten hardwood and leaf litter as staples, supplemented with vegetables, fruit and a calcium/protein source. Top up as eaten.
Enclosure
Terrestrial/fossorial. 8 – 12 cm of moist substrate (coir, rotten wood, leaf litter) over a 30 × 25 cm footprint, with cork-bark hides. Communal-tolerant.
Temperament
Docile, slow and secretive; coils when handled. Secretes staining quinones — wash hands afterwards.
